My church is doing 3 days of prayer and fasting. The definition of fasting is “to restrict food for a spiritual purpose.” Basically, for 3 days, I’m redirecting the time that I would normally spend eating, to time in prayer. Fasting is about drawing nearer to God. It’s a way to celebrate the goodness and mercy of God. It’s a time of preparing my heart and mind so that God can do something new in and through me.
There are a few different types of fasts:
- Traditional Fast – abstaining from all food and only consuming water. (Matthew 4)
- Juice Fast – drinking vegetable and fruit juice instead of consuming solid food.
- Daniel Fast – eating only fruits and vegetables as Daniel did. (Daniel 1)
During this fast, I am praying for God’s direction as this new year begins. I’m praying for our nation. I’m praying for my family and my relationships with others. I’m praying for you, the reader of this blog. I am praying for healing and restoration. I know that breakthroughs can come as a result of fasting. I’m trusting that God will use this time to speak and do big things.

There have been a lot of uncertain times lately so I felt like prayer and fasting is what I need to be doing. I don’t share this to make myself look “holier than thou” – I share this because maybe someone else has been feeling hopeless and is searching for a breakthrough too.
“Even now,” declares the LORD, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.” – Joel 2:12
